Why everyone should have a personal brand in 2021

If you’ve never had people tell you that you need a personal brand in 2021, i bet you’re not on the internet. While this statement is so common, it has every depth of truth in it and it is very valid; I mean it is very important that you start a personal brand.

Before we shoot, let me educate you a little bit about what a personal brand is.

A personal brand is a perception people have of you or your business or let’s just say it is something people know you for. I’m not going to go down the path path to start asking you what people know you for, i’d just tell you why this is so important in 2021.

Firstly, the world is populated enough already and for anything you stand for, there are hundreds of people standing for same. For every business you have, there are hundreds of businesses operating the exact way. For every idea you have, there are thousands of people running it through their minds.

This simply means that there is an invisible or visible war/competition going on between people to get their voices heard, to get their product seen, to get their businesses to people. Remember, the whole world doesn’t need your idea, just a few people do and you’d definitely be in a competition to get your idea to these people above other ideas.

This is why you need to have a personal brand; to give you an identity. So, what happens when you don’t have a personal brand?

  1. People will never choose you even though you’re worth it: Nobody loves to identify with something that doesn’t boost their ego out there. They want to point to the source where they got their value, commodity or whatever from.
  2. You will be underpriced: Branding gives you a form of value in itself. Remember i stated that it is a form of perception people have of you which means you can bend it to whatever taste you want. If they don’t have a perception of you, they’d price your value or service whichever way they want.
  3. Your voice will never be heard: Branding is like the colour you give to a bland object. You might be pretty good at something but no one is going to ever notice you if you do not take the step to add colour to what you do.

The big question now is; HOW DO YOU BRAND MYSELF/BUSINESS PRODUCT/ IDEA

Trust me, this is where millions of people get stuck and just a few who achieve it reap from the opportunity in it.

Before I answer that, i’d love to point you in the direction of what branding really entails. It involves information, telling people, making them see, making them feel, making them know. The reason I stated this is to let you know that to brand yourself you must be ready to give out a type of information and this information could be in form of pictures, videos, voice-form, articles, or even a label.

Let’s choose one; what do you do?

This is where it all starts from. Mind you, you’ve already begun a journey to marketing and i bet you marketing is not so complicated the way people see it. You can understand marketing as a layman. So get a note/your notepad and write out what exactly you do.

  • Sell a product
  • Sell a commodity
  • You’re into tech
  • You’re into design
  • You’re into writing or music
  • You’re into agriculture

Name it. What do you do?

If you’ve answered this question, the next thing you want to solve is to also write out what exactly you want to achieve. Let’s go back to the board again.

  • Make money
  • Make impact
  • Sell an idea
  • Change the world
  • Sell 1000 shoes
  • Solve agricultural problem in your community
  • Save people’s lives

Name it. Take these things one at a time. We’re on a journey to building a brand for you. The next big puzzle to fix is to identify the people you want to brand yourself to. Let’s go;

  • Doctors
  • Farmers
  • Farmers focused on maize and wheat
  • Farmers focused on fishery
  • Writers, authors, artistes
  • Companies, businesses, firms, corporations
  • Entrepreneurs

Be specific. You can keep breaking it down till you reach the core of what exactly you want to address with your product or service. The reason why you need to do this is to help you figure out the medium with which you would communicate when you’re branding, it will also help you maintain a posture that will fit into what you want them to perceive of you.

The next simple thing to do is to focus on what medium to focus on and how to communicate your value to them.
