Stop Applying For More Jobs, Do This Instead
Let’s face this squarely, you’ve been told to apply for as many jobs as possible if you’re really ready to get a job. Fine, i also gave that piece of advice some months ago. I always believed that to get a job and increase your chances of getting one, what you need is to increase the number of applications you throw in daily.
“We thank you for taking your time to apply for this role, unfortunately you didn’t……” ptzzzzzzz, let’s flip to other important emails please. I did this 2018 through 2019 and it became a norm for me to receive rejection emails.
There’s the burnout that comes with applying for hundreds of emails and i wrote a piece on how to deal with job-pression (job depression) but it’s long lost in places I cannot remember. But, my perception of getting jobs has changed and i will definitely share it with you and hope that you share it with your friends too.
David Adeleke, Head of Communications, Eko Atlantic made a valid point in one of Climbr’s lecture. He said; the best way to become a professional in your industry is to grow from somewhere. By this, he means start from the basic point in that industry. Very solid advice and i’d make it much more simple for you.
By the way, to attend the next Climbr lecture, visit www.bit.ly/climbrlectures to get in.
How do you start from a spot when you don’t even know how to get in? I mean, you’re pretty good but these recruiters and employers are not giving you the chance to prove yourself in the first place.
Nobody is going to tell you these things but they are gold and deserves to be shared to your friends.
- Talk to someone already in the industry:
Have you ever consulted someone in the industry which you want to apply for to ask them what the perks of the role you’re applying for involves? Most times, applying for more jobs will never solve the problem because you’re not qualified for such a position.
Now, don’t nod your head that you know everything that needs to be done. I can bet that there are a million and one things that you don’t know exactly which are the determining factors to be qualified for such a role.
Take for example, you took a course in marketing and took another one then you build a resume or CV and apply for the role, chances are that for most roles, there are specific tools you should know and some extra skills outside the role that will give you an edge.
The best suggestion is to be in the community of people who are in the field, ask them questions as much as possible and only focus on the skills they recommend for such positions.
2. Learn the tools, the skills recommended for specific positions;
To become a digital marketer, there are many skills you need to learn, there are also many tools you need to know how to use. The hack is continuous learning and this only works when you pay attention to the skills they demand for each position you apply for.
Everyone calls themselves developers these days but the top jobs require some specific languages. Take your time to go through different job roles on your own and look at the tools you need to learn, the softwares you need to have and master and the skills they require. Map it out and start learning them.
This sounds crazy because you feel you don’t have the luxury of time to do that. I bet you that you do have the luxury of time to keep applying for hundreds of jobs that will reject you and none will ever consider you. People employ based on competence and not pity, know this.
3. Apply for easy positions:
Davide Adeleke’s point applies here where you just have to start from the basics. You want to become a top marketer, start with a writing role to ensure that food drops on your table and keep improving in writing while you spend time developing yourself in marketing or grow into it.
David Adeleke explained how he started from content writing and then into journalism and then focusing on communications and then media. This is what growing in a career sounds like. The problem here is that you want to start as a top talent. The first two suggestions will work for you but they all demand time and there’s no hack to it that will override the process.
The advantage is that it saves you extra time that could be wasted and also gives you direction. One problem you’d face here is that you might be complacent with developing yourself as soon as you get a source of income.
A lot of people remain stuck once they start a job that they don’t grow up the career ladder. To learn how to drive yourself up to the position you want to attain in your career, follow this link to subscribe to my YouTube channel and turn on notifications because a video will be made from it.
