You can be very good at a skill but get rejected the whole year for the jobs you apply to. The recruiters do not hate you. Sometimes, your Resume or CV might be the reason.

The idea of having a CV or Resume is to in a document, a brief one, describe what you are capable of and what you have done in the past. Sadly, a lot of people do not make creating a perfect Resume or CV with priority.

In this article, I’d walk you through the importing things you need to have in your Resume/ CV which will help you create one with ease, so stay with me.

What is the difference between a CV and a Resume

A few years ago, I found myself searching on Google for the difference between a CV and a Resume and to know which one to submit for each job application.

The difference is simple; A CV contains all your achievements and what you have done while your Resume just contains specific information about what you have done relating to the job you’re applying to.

A CV can be pages long because it covers different things you have done over time and you keep updating as you go while a Resume is short and straightforward relating to what you have done in line with the job you want to get.

Whichever one you use (although they are similar), it wouldn’t move the needle in the heart of your recruiter if you don’t build it the right way. Here are the steps to take to ensure you build a great one;

Pick The Right Resume Format

Before you start working on your Resume, you need to figure out what it should look like. Do not forget that your Resume has to be simple and straightforward which means you need to plan out what it will lookout.

The emphasis here is on Resume because sometimes, it is better to submit a Resume seeing you just want to apply for a role. For professional careers, a CV is best to submit because you want to showcase all that you have done to get to where you are.

The reason you need to pick the right format is that for several industries, what you want to display differs. For instance, in the content marketing industry, there needs to be an emphasis on the tools you know beyond the experiences you have.

Another reason why picking the best format is because

I’ll highly recommend that you get a professional help if you want to build your Resume, however, you can start by using Google Docs.

Compare with a professional Resume in the Industry

You will need help while building a great Resume. This is because there are some things that need to be emphasized in it. Remember, it has to be really short, which sometimes is a page.

For different industries, the recruiters have some key things they look out for which you must ensure you have there. You might not have the experience yet, but it is good you include it and then go learn it.

Another reason why it is important to compare with a professional Resume is because of the use of description. I remember when building my Resume, I explained my experience in the best words I could use.

However, when I compared it with a professional Resume, I could see a lot of difference because the other person used some specific keywords which were industry-related.

What should you look for in another professional Resume?

  • The keywords used
  • The tools displayed
  • The certification acquired
  • The core strengths the person listed

Tailor it to meet job demand

Most times, your Resume will be specific to the role you’re applying for. Also, another secret is that different industries have the key function they want you to perform in their company, hence there might be different requirements despite same position when comparing to different companies.

For instance, a content marketing position in the B2B SaaS industry will be a little bit different from that of an educational position. The choice of tools might be different or emphasis on core strength.

This is why you need to do a detailed look-through of the job requirement to know what exactly that position wants you to do. Once you do know, you’ll have to tailor your Resume to fit that job description.

This would mean that you’ll have to do the difficult work of re-organizing your Resume for the different job positions you apply for.

This might sound like a lot of work. However, you need to remember that you want to get a job badly and you stand slimmer chances of ever getting a great job if you do not take the right path which is what I am helping you out with.
